Rig check

Diagnostics ▸ Rig check looks over your whole rig and tells you what is wrong with it.

Stagewright refuses an impossible connection the moment you make it, but until now nothing ever looked at a finished rig. The failures that actually cost you a soundcheck are the quiet ones: a chain that stops before the output, a control bound to a card you deleted, a MIDI card waiting for a controller that is not plugged in. Each one looks perfectly fine on the canvas and simply does nothing.

The tab carries a count when there is something to see, so you do not have to go looking.

What it reports

Errors are things that are stopping something working.

Audio that reaches no outputSignal flows into a card but never arrives at an audio output or a Bridge Out, so none of it is audible
A control bound to a card that no longer existsThe control does nothing when you press it
A control bound to a parameter that no longer existsUsually after a plugin update changed its parameter list
A bypass gate whose source card was deletedThe gated card's own on/off will not respond, because something that is gone is still driving it
A MIDI card waiting for a deviceThat controller is not connected. The card keeps its mapping, so plugging it back in restores it
An instrument with no MIDI reaching itIts audio is wired up but nothing is playing it, so it stays silent

Warnings are things that are probably not what you meant.

A card wired to nothing at allNothing feeds it and nothing reads from it, so it has no effect on what you hear
A card that feeds something but is fed by nothingIt passes silence downstream

What it deliberately does not report

A half-built rig is not a broken one, and a panel that complains while you are calmly working gets closed and then is worth nothing when something is actually wrong. So:

  • Nothing is reported until the rig has at least one wire. A canvas of cards you have just dropped stays quiet.
  • Tuners, meters and monitors are never faulted for having nothing after them. Signal arriving is the point; they are not supposed to feed anything.
  • Bypassed cards are not mentioned at all. Leaving most of a rig bypassed is a normal way to save a project. An earlier version of this did report them and produced eighteen notes on a real rig, every one of them about a card the owner had switched off on purpose.
  • A parameter is never reported missing for a plugin whose parameters have not finished loading.

If Rig check tells you something that is not a problem, that is a bug in Rig check. Please report it.
