DoodLoop glossary, Spanish (es-ES and es-419)

Proposed terminology for both Spanish localizations. Needs review before the catalog is translated.

Two locales, because you asked for both. This document is mostly a shared glossary with a short list of places the two genuinely part company. Everything not in the divergence table is identical in both, which keeps the second locale cheap to maintain.

Register: impersonal infinitive for actions, tú for explanatory copy

Same shape as the pt-PT decision and for the same reason: iOS in Spanish uses the infinitive for buttons and actions (Eliminar, Guardar, Exportar), and an app that says Elimina beside a system sheet saying Eliminar reads as careless.

Explanatory sentences use tú (Puedes importar fotos…), which is Apple's own choice in both es-ES and es-419 for consumer apps and suits a playful drawing app. This differs from the pt-PT decision, where I recommended the neutral pode, because Spanish tú does not carry the same childish connotation that Portuguese tu does with older users.

Never usted, never vosotros. vosotros would be wrong for es-419 and overly formal registers would be wrong for both.

Where es-ES and es-419 differ

These are the only strings that should differ between the two files. Everything else is shared.

Deliberately not diverged: ordenador/computadora (no string mentions a computer), móvil/celular (none mentions a phone), and decimal separators (handled by formatters, not the catalog).

Core terms, shared by both

brush	pincel	The artist's brush. Not brocha, which is a decorator's wide brush.
eraser	borrador	The object. goma is also used but borrador matches the tool naming in Spanish image editors.
lasso	lazo	Standard.
canvas	lienzo	The painter's canvas. lienzo is right for the drawing surface; the device screen is pantalla, and the two are not interchangeable (same distinction as pt-PT's tela/ecrã).
blend mode	modo de fusión	Matches Photoshop in Spanish.
opacity	opacidad	Direct cognate.
symmetry	simetría	Direct cognate.
ruler	regla	The drawing guide.
fill (the tool)	bote de pintura	The paint bucket, a noun among nouns. Same reasoning as pt-PT: a bare infinitive Rellenar sitting in a tool palette reads wrong.
fill (the action)	rellenar	The verb, for "Fill whole layer".
stroke	trazo	The mark a brush leaves.
playback	reproducción	Standard media term.
loop	bucle / en bucle	The product name DoodLoop is never translated.
export	exportar	Standard.
trash	papelera	The system term in both locales.
onion skin	onion skin	Decided: kept in English, matching the pt-PT choice.
timelapse	timelapse	Kept in English, as in pt-PT. cámara rápida exists but would not be recognised as the feature name.
rotoscope	rotoscopia (noun), rotoscopiar (verb)	Decided: translated, unlike pt-PT. Spanish has a clean verb where Portuguese did not, so the permission string reads naturally instead of needing hacer rotoscope.

Decisions taken

• frame → fotograma in both locales. No divergence.
• onion skin stays English, matching pt-PT.
• rotoscope is translated (rotoscopia / rotoscopiar), unlike pt-PT, because Spanish has a usable verb and Portuguese did not. The two locales differing here is correct: each reads naturally in its own language.
• Register: infinitive for actions, tú for explanatory copy.

The full divergence between es-ES and es-419 is therefore just two things: Ajustes/Configuración and vídeo/video. Every other string is identical, which is what makes carrying both locales affordable.

Layout risk

Spanish runs roughly 20 to 25% longer than English, slightly worse than Portuguese. Watch these in the dense toolbars:

• bote de pintura (15 chars) against Fill (4)
• reproducción (12) against Play (4)
• modo de fusión (14) against Blend (5)
• Configuración (13, es-419 only) against Settings (8)
